Kitchen Tip Tuesday: Composting

We have a compost bin in our backyard (actually, we have THREE bins, all in different stages of ripening), and we save all our fruit/vegetable scraps, tea bags, etc. in a little bucket with a lid that sits on the counter.  Once a day or so someone takes the bucket out to the bins and dumps it. For the most part, this works great.

However... sometimes things get a little out of control when we're peeling a whole lot of potatoes and/or carrots.  That's a lot of scraps all at once, and they seem to get everywhere! Mr. Mamie suggested that we start doing our peeling over a spread of newsprint.  Then, when everything's peeled, we can bundle up the newspaper/peelings and carry the whole thing out to the compost bin.  The mess is thus contained, AND the newspaper adds some needed "browns" to our compost.

Thanks to TammysRecipes.com for hosting Kitchen Tip Tuesdays!

  1. Great tip! We haphazardly compost on our garden and just mix it in when we get the soil ready. The rest goes to the chickens. :>)
