Mom's Party Mix

Wombat and GolfDad at one of Nephew's football games, October 2008.

A family tradition for many, many years has been that football season = party mix season.  You know fall has arrived when our homes are filled with the sounds of football on the TV and mouths crunching party mix!

Mom made great party mix, the recipe for which follows.  Over the years, Igor and I have both tended to make more "sauce" and kick up the spiciness with additional red pepper flakes or some cayenne - we like our flavors a little more intense.

Mom's Party Mix

One 12.3 ounce box Rice Chex cereal
One 8 ounce bag pretzel sticks
3 cups mixed nuts
1/3 cup butter
1 tablespoon lemon juice
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1¼ teaspoons crushed red peppers

Spray large roasting pan with non-stick coating.  Dump cereal, pretzels, and nuts (in that order) into pan.

In small saucepan, over low heat, melt butter.  Stir in lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and crushed red pepper.   Let mixture heat almost to boiling, stirring constantly.

Drizzle butter mixture over cereal mixture, constantly stirring and lightly tossing cereal mixture .

Bake at 250 degrees for 60 minutes.  Stir every 15 minutes during baking.

Munch, crunch, and enjoy!
