First Grade Thanksgiving Feast 11/23/10

At our school we have a tradition where the first grade classes have a "Thanksgiving Feast" the day before we go on break. The feast is the culmination of weeks of learning about Native Americans, the role of the "Three Sisters" (corn, bean, and pumpkin seeds that were planted together), the Mayflower, Pilgrims, the seasons, the harvest, and MORE.

Each of the six classes class contributes one element of the meal (the items are generously donated by parents): turkey (deli slices), cranberries and juice to drink, rolls and butter, corn (my class's responsibility), pumpkin pie,  and "harvest mix" consisting of Bugle chips, pretzels, M&Ms, dried cranberries, candy corn, seeds, and a Hrshey's Kiss.

The teacher who does the harvest mix calls it "American Blessings Mix" and has a description that we printed on small paper and gave to the kids:

Bugles- shaped like a cornucopia or horn of plenty, a symbol of our nations abundance.

Pretzel twists - arms folded as in prayer, a freedom sought by those who founded our country.

Candy corn - sacrifices made by the Pilgrims during their first winter, when they survived on only a few kernels of corn a day.

Nuts and seeds - promise of a future harvest, one we will reap only if seeds are planted and tended with diligence.

Dried fruits - harvest gifts of our bountiful land.

M&Ms - memories of those who came before us.

Hershey's Kiss - love of family and friends that sweetens our lives.

Here are some photos from the day:

A table-full of boys making their placemats for the dinner.

 More placemat creations.

Some of my cute kids, waiting by the tables.
A view of the tables before the kids sat down. All the classes are in a big circle around the tables.

We sang a couple of songs before we ate. These are some of my kids doing actions with the songs.

I have an active duty military mom in my class. She was able to come and be a volunteer today, setting up and serving food.

All the kids seated and eating (at last!).

After the feast we piled into a classroom for more singing.

My fabulous colleague T.A., who leads us in song while wearing a Pilgrim dress!
